Winemaker Mari Wells Coyle
Mari Wells Coyle is an award-winning California winemaker with a taste for adventure in wine, food and life. When she’s not in the cellar, you might find her in the kitchen experimenting with food and wine pairings, or navigating whitewater rapids along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada.
Mari honed her winemaking skills in some of the world’s finest wine regions, apprenticing under premier Pinot Noir producers like Gloria Ferrer and Merry Edwards in Sonoma County. She worked in the cellars of Chard Farm in Central Otago, New Zealand, before becoming the winemaker at Chatom Vineyards in the Sierra Foothills at the age of 24. The first vintages of this UC Davis Viticulture and Enology grad were decorated with regional ”best of show” and gold medal awards.
In 2005, Mari moved to El Dorado County in the Sierra Foothills — a natural migration for a young winemaker who gains inspiration from rugged hills and dramatic sunsets.
As the winemaker for David Girard Vineyards for nearly 10 years, Mari earned some of the region’s highest accolades for her Rhone-style wines — often described as seamlessly balanced, layered in construction, and incredible with food. Her Rhone varietals have been recognized by the likes of wine critic Robert Parker, The San Francisco Chronicle and Sunset Magazine.
Mari works as a consulting winemaker and she served as a judge for the 2013 California State Fair Wine Competition.
She lives in the Sierra Foothills with her husband and their two young sons. They enjoy the outdoors, traveling, and feasting with friends at their table.
